Custom software development

Custom software is a system built from scratch around how your company works, instead of bending your company to an off-the-shelf product. MS Labs designs, builds and maintains it with you, and you own the code.

What is custom software development

Custom software development, also called bespoke software development, is building a system specifically for one company. Instead of buying a generic tool and changing how your team works to fit it, you get a system that follows your process, speaks your operation's language and connects to the systems you already have.

In practice, that can be an internal dashboard that replaces a dozen spreadsheets, an app for your field team, a client portal, or an AI automation that takes repetitive work off someone's desk.

When custom software makes sense

Custom software is not the answer to everything. If an existing product solves 90% of the problem at a fair price, use it. Building makes sense when:

  • your process is your competitive edge and no product represents it without workarounds;
  • your team spends hours every week copying data between systems;
  • you pay for several subscriptions that together do less than one system would;
  • the business depends on a specific rule (pricing, approvals, scheduling, logistics) that products don't support;
  • you want to sell the software itself as a product;
  • there is a clear opportunity to use AI on your own data, and no tool does it the way you need.

What you get

  • Discovery of the problem and the current process before any technical decision;
  • A written proposal with scope by feature, delivery order, timeline and price;
  • Interface design for the people who will use the system every day;
  • Full development: frontend, backend, database and integrations;
  • Release to the web, the App Store and Google Play, as needed;
  • Documentation and the source code in a repository you own;
  • Maintenance and new features after launch, if you want to keep working with us.

How the development process works

  1. Discovery. We talk about the problem, the users, what exists today and your time and budget constraints.
  2. Proposal. You get in writing what will be built, in what order and what it costs.
  3. Development in cycles. We ship working pieces frequently. You use the real system, not a status report.
  4. Launch. We release, watch the first days of real use and fix what comes up.
  5. Evolution. With the system in use, the next features are chosen from what users actually do.

Why nearshore with a Brazilian team

Working with a nearshore team in Brazil gives companies in the US and Canada a practical middle ground between an expensive local agency and an offshore team twelve hours away:

Technology we use

We pick technology for the problem, not for the trend. These are the tools we work with every day:

How much custom software costs

Cost depends mainly on four factors: how many features the first version needs, how many integrations with other systems exist, how many platforms you need (web, iOS, Android), and security and performance requirements.

That is why we don't use a price list. After discovery you get a fixed price for a defined scope. For a detailed breakdown, read our guide on how much custom software costs.

Why MS Labs

MS Labs is an engineering company, not an agency. You talk directly to the people writing the code, technical decisions are explained in plain language, and the system we deliver is yours. We work remotely with companies in Brazil and abroad, in English or Portuguese.

If your process deserves its own system, tell us what you need.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between custom software and off-the-shelf software?

Off-the-shelf software (SaaS) solves the average case for many companies, and you adapt to it. Custom software is built for your specific process, integrates with the tools you already use and evolves as the business changes.

Who owns the source code?

You do. The repository, infrastructure and documentation live in accounts owned by your company. If you ever want to move to another team, you take everything with you.

Why work with a team in Brazil?

Brazil shares most business hours with the Americas, so meetings happen in your day, not at midnight. You work with engineers who communicate in English, usually at a lower cost than a local agency.

Can we start small?

Yes, and we recommend it. We start with the smallest version that solves the main problem, put it in front of real users and grow from there.

How do I know the cost before we start?

After discovery you get a written proposal with scope by feature, delivery order, timeline and a fixed price. Nothing starts until you approve it.
